Opening a second chance bank account can be a way for you to access banking services and rebuild your banking history if you’ve been denied a checking account in the past due to banking issues.
What Is A Second Chance Bank Account?
Second chance bank accounts are for people who were denied a regular account due to past financial challenges. They offer basic services like a debit card and online banking and are typically offered by only a few banks and credit unions.
Banks and credit unions rely on a bank reporting agency called ChexSystems and many use this information to determine whether someone is eligible for an account. People may have to rely on second chance bank accounts if they have a history of financial difficulties that have led to negative items on their banking record, such as unpaid overdraft fees or bounced checks.
You can also choose a bank or credit union that does not rely on ChexSystems when evaluating new customers. These financial institutions are known as non-ChexSystems banks or credit unions.
Whichever option you choose, we’ve got you covered. We’ve selected the best second chance bank accounts based on acceptance rates, checking account features and benefits, and the accounts with the lowest fees. Best of all, you can open an account today!

Current Works Hard for You
Current offers a really unique service it calls Gas Hold Removals. What’s a gas hold? Some gas stations may apply a hold from $50 to $100 when you use your card to pump gas. If you only pumped $10 of gas, but the gas station places a $100 hold on your funds, you won’t have access to the $90 difference for up to 3 business days! The Current Build card will immediately remove the hold so you have access to all your funds. We haven’t found that benefit anywhere in the marketplace.
We love the features, we love the smartphone app, and we love Current. That makes us think you’ll love them too.

- Convenience and drug stores
- Gas stations
- Monthly subscriptions, including streaming services
- Restaurants

All other purchases will earn 1% cash back. To earn the reward your account must be “active”. An active account is one that has a monthly direct deposit of $1,000 or more.
But if you choose not to or cannot meet the monthly direct deposit requirement, the account cashback program is reduced from 2% to 1%. In our view, that’s still a very strong offering with very few fees.
Consumers Love Upgrade
Managing your transactions is effortless, facilitated through either an intuitive online dashboard or the convenient Upgrade mobile app, available for both iOS (4.8 out of 5 rating) and Android (4.7 out of 5 rating) users. You’ll also have free access to your credit score and will be notified of any changes.

GO2bank
GO2bank is an offering of pre-paid card giant GoBank and we think it’s a step in the right direction. Like some of the newer “challenger banks” GO2bank will deposit your direct deposit check up to 2 days early and has cashback rewards on several categories of purchases. This account also makes you eligible for the GO2bank credit card, which has no annual fee or required credit check.
One significant drawback to many online-only bank accounts is that they have no way to accept cash deposits. But GO2bank accepts cash deposits at over 90,000 Green Dot locations nationwide. However, participating retailers may charge you a fee.
If you direct deposit over $500, your monthly maintenance fee of $5.00 is waived. And, they offer a pretty sweet overdraft protection program, but it has a gotcha charge of $15 if you don’t replace the funds within 24 hours.
Account-holders will appreciate the ability to budget their money with the help of a mobile app, budgeting tools, and a savings vault. In fact, they pay 1% on all money in the saving vault up to $5,000.

Wells Fargo Bank
Wells Fargo changed the Opportunity Checking account to Clear Access Banking. And we like one change, in particular. Wells Fargo has done away with overdraft and non-sufficient funds (NSF) fees.
Clear Access Banking is a debit card-only account (no paper checks available) and if you attempt to purchase something without sufficient funds, the transaction will be denied. That’s a lot better than having the transaction approved and then discovering you’ve been hit with a $35 overdraft fee.
There is a $5 monthly fee, but that can be waived for account holders 24 years old and younger. This account is available to residents in all 50 states.
- The largest number of branches in the U.S.

Available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Capital One acts more like an online bank than one with over 400 branches in a few states. Its highly-rated smartphone app gives customers full control of their account and you can access everything from a computer, too.
Capital One 360 Checking at a Glance
- No opening deposit is required
- No monthly or annual fees
- No minimum balance and no overdraft fees
- Add cash to your account at CVS® locations.
- No-fee access to over 70,000 ATMs nationwide

How The Overdraft Feature Works
The account offers two overdraft services. The first is a free savings transfer where you link your checking account to a savings account. If you overdraw from your checking account, Capital One will cover the charge by making a transfer from your savings account.
The second option is a no-fee overdraft where the bank approves recurring debit payments, check payments, or bill pay payments even if it results in a negative balance for your account. To qualify, you’ll need to receive at least $250 in direct deposits during two of the three previous months.
Customer Service
In the era of chatbots and customer service-by-email, Capital One stands out for its personalized customer service. Once you set up an online account, you can chat 24/7 with a live customer service representative. If you want to speak with a representative on the phone, you can call between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern Time.
The website is laid out well and easy to understand. The smartphone app is also easy to navigate and has received 4.9 out of 5 stars in the Apple store and 4.6 out of 5 stars in the Google Play store.

Who needs a second chance banking account?
Banks often refuse to open checking accounts for consumers who are considered a ‘bad risk.’ You could be considered a bad risk for things like bouncing checks (which can be accidental), writing bad checks (a deliberate act), having a low credit score, or simply breaking a bank’s rules by exceeding the daily ATM withdrawal limit or frequently transferring money between accounts.
Many of these activities result in fees being charged to your account, and if you have too many fees or are not paying the fees due to a low account balance, you may be considered a bad risk for a bank. This can lead to the denial of a traditional checking account and make it difficult to manage your finances.
However, when it comes to second chance bank accounts, the situation is different. Banks do not consider your banking history when you apply for a second chance account, so in almost all cases, you shouldn’t be denied an account. This provides an opportunity for individuals who have faced financial challenges in the past to still have access to banking services and work towards improving their financial situation.
It’s worth mentioning that while opening a second chance account can provide a fresh start, it’s essential to be responsible and mindful of your banking activities. Building a positive banking history by managing your account responsibly can help you regain trust with financial institutions and potentially qualify for more traditional banking services in the future.
It can be reassuring to know that most of the second chance bank accounts we’ve featured above are just as good, if not better than a traditional checking account you may have had in the past or that are offered by many banks and credit unions today.
What do I need to open a second chance bank account?
To open a second chance account, you typically only need to provide an official form of identification and basic personal information. If the account has a minimum opening deposit requirement, you will also need to have cash available.
It is essential to note that some banks may have age restrictions on their accounts, so you may need to meet a certain age requirement to qualify for a second-chance account. Additionally, it’s important to understand that minors cannot open an account without an adult co-signer.
Are there any low-fee online banks that offer second chance checking accounts?
Yes, there are low-fee online banks that offer second chance checking accounts. One example is Chime, which provides a second chance checking account without charging monthly fees. Chime also offers tools and features to help automate savings, making it a beneficial option for those seeking a second chance checking account.
What factors should be considered when choosing a second chance checking account?
When choosing a second chance checking account, it’s important to consider several factors. One factor is the fees associated with the account, including monthly fees and other charges that can add up quickly.
Another factor to consider is the account requirements, such as the minimum opening deposit and ongoing balance requirements. It’s crucial to determine how much money you can afford to deposit or maintain in the account.
Accessibility is another factor to consider, so it’s beneficial to find a bank or credit union that offers online and mobile banking options, along with a debit card and nearby ATM access.
What are the cons or drawbacks of second chance checking accounts?
There are some drawbacks to second chance checking accounts. They usually come with higher fees compared to traditional checking accounts. Additionally, there are more restrictions, such as no overdrafts, and limited benefits and perks associated with these accounts. Furthermore, there are fewer banks to choose from when it comes to second chance checking accounts.
What are the specific benefits of second chance checking accounts?
Second chance checking accounts have several benefits, including easy qualification even with a poor banking history. They often come with online and mobile banking options, as well as a free debit card and checkbook. Additionally, these accounts are federally insured by either the FDIC (banks) or NCUA (credit unions).
What Is ChexSystems?
Most consumers aren’t familiar with ChexSystems until they’re denied a new bank account or a merchant declines to accept their check. Briefly, ChexSystems is a consumer reporting agency (CRA) that tracks your checking and savings account activity.
It’s similar to the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) which collect data on consumers’ loan and credit card history. A ChexSystems record doesn’t affect your credit score and doesn’t factor into banks’ decisions to extend credit, but it can impact your ability to open a bank account or write checks. And in today’s tech-forward world, having access to a checking account for a host of services is critical.
ChexSystems is not responsible for the decision made by banks to deny you a bank account; however, the information reported by banks and credit unions and stored by ChexSystems can result in a denial of a bank account.
The following information may be stored in your ChexSystems report:
- Paid and unpaid insufficient fund items (“NSF”)
- Any kind of fraud
- Uncollected overdrafts, ATM transactions, or automatic payments the bank paid
- Abuse of debit card, savings account or ATM card
- Violation of any banking rules and regulations
- Opening an account with false information
There may be additional reasons a bank reports their customers to ChexSystems, but the above list represents the most common reasons consumers end up in ChexSystems.
What Is Early Warning Services (EWS)?
EWS was created by major banks including Wells Fargo, Capital One, BB&T, JP Morgan Chase, and Bank of America to prevent fraud and reduce risk. Whereas companies such as ChexSystems and TeleCheck focus on keeping records of people who mismanage bank accounts with overdrafts or writing checks on closed accounts, EWS focuses on fraudulent activity.
Its database tracks consumers’ negative interactions with banks, as well as activities such as bank fraud, forgery, check kiting, check alteration, and counterfeiting.
What is Telecheck?
Like the credit bureaus, ChexSystems, and EWS, Telecheck is a consumer reporting agency (CRA) that focuses specifically on consumer information related to checks and bank accounts.
Retailers use Telecheck to determine how risky it is to accept someone’s check, making a decision on the spot whether or not they’ll accept it as payment. If a check is approved by the Telecheck system, the merchant is guaranteed that they’ll get the full amount of the approved check.
Some banks and other financial institutions use Telecheck when deciding whether or not they should allow a consumer to open a checking account. This is done in an effort by financial institutions to reduce fraud and minimize risk as much as possible.

Conclusion
While traditional banks may deny checking accounts to individuals considered a bad risk, second chance banking offers a pathway to banking services even if you have faced financial challenges in the past. By meeting basic requirements such as providing identification and personal information, you can open a second chance account and work towards improving your financial situation.
It’s important to be responsible and mindful of your banking activities to build a positive banking history, which can pave the way for more traditional banking options in the future.
