Shawn Chapman Obituary - 2024 (2024)

Mr. Richey Shawn Chapman, age 58, of Chatsworth, passed away on May 22, 2024, in Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga due to cardiac arrest.
Shawn spent most of his life in the New Hope Community of Murray County and is a 1983 graduate of Murray County High School. He graduated from Reinhardt College, and received his Funeral Director and Embalming degree from Jefferson State College in Birmingham, Alabama. He began his career in the funeral business with a part-time job with Jessie Jones Funeral Home of Chatsworth while still in high school. After graduating from Murray High, he was employed by Love Funeral Home in Dalton while getting his Funeral Director and Embalming training and license from Jefferson State College in Birmingham, Alabama. He was employed by Love Funeral Home for 14 years, then was manager of Kenemer Funeral Home of Dalton for 4 years. In 2000, he opened Shawn Chapman Funeral Home of Chatsworth, and then added the Crematory and Monument service that is currently being operated by both of his sons, Wil Chapman and Bret Chapman. He dedicated his whole life to his boys and went above and beyond to show them his love and be everything that they always needed from him at all times. He loved them more than you can imagine a parent’s love. You never heard a negative word about or associated with him. He gave everyone his all at all times. Selflessness didn’t even come close to describing his character, and his dignity was unmatched. Shawn and Chelsea were both long-time members of Rockbridge Community Church. Shawn and Chelsea share a love that most people never experience in a lifetime, and that was evident to all who loved, cared for, and were close to them. He always said he could not live without her while she would say she loves him more than the breath in her body. He gave his heart and time to Murray County, whether it came to volunteering or a donation, and he had so much pride in being a part of this county.
He has been given several awards for service to the community as listed below:
Ruritan - National Distinguished Service Award, American Heart Association - Living Legacy, Chamber of Commerce - Business Man Of the Year, Murray Medical Center - Outstanding Contributions, Charter Media - Citizen's Salute, Murray County Sheriff's Office - Appreciation Award, , American Cancer Society - All Star Team & Best Theme (Relay for Life), and KCMB Beautification Award. Georgia Lion's Eye Bank and Chatsworth Health Care were organizations Shawn supported.
