Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh is the second television movie of and the official finale of the series.

Synopsis[]

As Christmas approaches, we find Drake and Josh working at the mall as Santa and his helper. A sweet little girl asks Drake (as Santa) if he will give her family the best Christmas ever. Momentarily distracted, Drake promises he'll do it.

Plot[]

Shortly before Christmas, Walter and Audrey decide to leave home for a tropical vacation. Their children Drake and Megan come home while Josh shows them his snowman air balloon decoration, which Megan sabotages. Later at the mall, Drake tells Josh that he will be throwing a Christmas party on the roof of Josh's workplace, the Premiere theater, which Josh is unsure of, but Helen approves on the condition that Drake dresses as Santa at the mall. While hiding from a woman looking to kiss him, Drake meets a little girl named Mary Alice who says she is a fan of his music. In his rush to get away, Drake accidentally makes an unbreakable promise that he will give her family the best Christmas ever. At the party, Craig and Eric suggest to Drake that he perform a song in the upcoming Christmas parade, but Drake explains that he will be in Las Vegas at a concert. Later on, some party crashers show up whom Josh calls the police on, but he falls off the roof after they arrive during a mix-up, landing in the back of a moving pickup truck with the police trailing close behind, eventually rolling out only to be arrested. In jail, he meets his cellmate, Bludge. At first, Bludge tries to beat him up until Josh entertains him with magic tricks. However, Bludge explains that he has a tough-guy image to maintain, but since he likes Josh, they agree on a compromise: Bludge will hit various parts of the cell while Josh pretends to shout in pain, giving the other convicts the illusion that Bludge is beating him up.

Knowing he must fulfill his promise after Mary Alice tells him about her sick foster mom and busy foster dad, Drake attempts to break Josh out to help him, only to get caught and arrested. Drake and Josh are sent to court, with Helen acting as their lawyer. She informs Judge Newman of Drake's promise to Mary Alice, who decides that they will not be sent to jail as long as they fulfill it. Afterwards, they meet their cruel and embittered parole officer Perry Gilbert, who says he would ask Mary Alice's family if they had the best Christmas ever; if any of them say "no", they will go to jail. The duo soon meets Mary Alice's foster family, which include frequently feuding twins Lily and Violet, Zigfee, a foreign boy who speaks an unknown language, know-it-all Trey, and Mary Alice's rebellious, loner older brother Luke. They find many possibilities to give the family the best Christmas ever, but their attempts are foiled by Officer Gilbert. Drake and Josh enlist Megan's help to sabotage Officer Gilbert's doings by bribing her with Trevor's rare Smith Royal oboe; however, she stops upon discovering it was fake.

Josh then visits Officer Gilbert's mother, who explains that as a child, Officer Gilbert always wanted a live pet chimpanzee for Christmas. One Christmas morning, he found one sitting in a cage by the tree. However, when he opened the cage door to play with it, the chimp attacked him, urinated on him, then jumped out the window, causing him to hate Christmas ever since. Drake and Josh realize that since Christmas was ruined for him, he wants to ruin it for everyone else.

Drake and Josh eventually decide to take Mary Alice's family caroling; however, nobody in their neighborhood listens to them. The group decides to put on a concert, performing a rock rendition of "12 Days of Christmas", which the entire family loves so much they decide to perform it in the Christmas parade. At the parade, Officer Gilbert tricks Crazy Steve into loudly reminding the duo in front of Mary Alice that they will go to prison if they do not keep their promise. Believing they were only being nice to avoid punishment, Mary Alice and her family leave heartbroken. Despite the family's anger towards them, Drake and Josh are determined to keep their promise. Meanwhile, they also send Officer Gilbert a nice chimpanzee as a Christmas present along with a heartfelt letter, which causes him to begin loving Christmas again. They then borrow Steve's woodchipper ("Sally") to make it snow in front of Mary Alice's house by putting ice in the machine, but it inadvertently shoots large chunks at the house, shattering all the windows. After the machine knocks both brothers' unconscious, Officer Gilbert brings them home. The brothers enter the living room the next morning, where Mary Alice's family surprises them, having learned from Officer Gilbert that the two were not actually using them to stay out of prison. The vote is held, with everyone voting "yes". Drake and Josh are officially off probation and the charges have officially dropped. Bludge, dressed as Santa, then comes down the chimney to deliver gifts to everyone, including a real Smith Royal oboe for Megan. Josh's girlfriend Mindy, who had left town for the holidays, arrives too after hearing about everything that happened, and Steve gets Sally to make snow by using 7,000 pounds of hard cheese. Drake and Josh's parents then arrive home from their troubled vacation at their "bungalow", which turned out to be a small hut made of bamboo and was blown away earlier in a tropical storm. As everyone plays in the blanket of "cheese snow", they truly have the best Christmas ever.

Production[]

A brand-new Drake & Josh TV movie tentatively entitled "Merry Christmas, Drake and Josh" began production on July 7, 2008, and wrapped up production on August 15, 2008. It premiered on December 5, 2008.

Trivia[]

• The movie was previously under the working title, "Drake & Josh: Best Christmas Ever".
• This is the first (and only) movie/episode of the series where Mindy has bangs on her forehead.
• This is the second Drake & Josh media to not contain laugh tracks, or the theme song I Found a Way.
  • It's also the only film to feature arrow transitions and an opening comment background during a phone call scene.
• This is the only entry in the Drake & Josh franchise to be released in 2008.
• While Josh is flipping channels, one of the shows he flips to, happens to be Zoey 101, specifically the episode "Chasing Zoey".
• This is a true official series finale of . but this is not the last time for Drake Bell & Josh Peck to reunite & both have screentime together, as in 2016 Drake Bell guest starred with Josh Peck in Grandfathered episode "The Biter" where they both had a Drake & Josh reunion with three references from Drake & Josh show and in 2021, They made cameos in May Cause Immaculate Conception episode of Robot Chicken.
• Josh's Grandma is mentioned in this special.
• Mrs. Hayfer makes a brief cameo, during the scene where accidentally hit the fire hydrant and spray water on her.
• The set for Drake and Josh's room is entirely different and has none of the posters or stickers seen in the original room as well as all new furniture. Possibly because the original set was no longer around to shoot at.
• Even though in a Christmas flashback, Mrs. Gilbert told Josh about the monkey peed on young Officer Gilbert, this wasn't cut or removed in the movie for being shown on public TV.
• When Josh is arrested by the police, his registry reads "NCC-1701", a Constitution Class name from the TV show, Star Trek: The Original Series.
• This is the first (and only) movie/episode of the series in when Drake still has his Bowl Cut hair from Season 2 & Season 4 and Josh has longer hair very similar to his Season 3 hairstyle. Walter’s hair is also noticeably longer as well, and Josh’s voice is slightly deeper here than it was earlier in the series.
• This is the only Christmas special in the franchise.
• Megan has a minor role in this movie.
  • This is likely due to Miranda working on iCarly at the time this special was made.
• This is the eleventh time Josh is in jail (the first time was in The Gary Grill of Season 2).
• In the second scene, you see Drake and Josh pass by a store called Schneider's Secret. This is a parody of Victoria's Secret, and it is a reference to one of the movie's co-writers, Dan Schneider.
• This is the final appearance of Drake Parker, Josh Nichols, Megan Parker, Audrey Parker-Nichols, Walter Nichols, Mindy Crenshaw, Helen Dubois, Crazy Steve, Gavin Mitchell, Craig Ramirez, Eric Blonowitz, and Mrs. Hayfer.
• When Drake was sitting by the decorated lawn chair, the plush blue octopus seen in the Zoey 101 episode "Surprise" was seen right behind him.
• Their ages were never revealed.
• Liza Tupper was supposed to make an appearance in this special but didn't for unknown reasons.
  • Liza Tupper is Dr. Phyllis' daughter and is often referred to as "Hot Liza" by Drake and other boys in school.
  • By now, Drake and Josh should've graduated after high school.
• Drake asks Josh about going to Inside-Out Burger which he again mentions from the episodes Driver's License and Tree House. Inside-Out Burger is a parody of In 'n Out Burger.
• When everyone sings The 12 Days of Christmas, Zigfee says "7 swans a-swimming" as "fleeb ega queeshteef", because he doesn't talk properly until the end.
• When Zigfee learns how to say "Yes" at the end, that's almost the only thing he could say, because he also tries saying Merry Christmas as well except, he mispronounces it Murry Christmilk, he should have also learned how to say "7 swans a-swimming" as one of his words since he's been mispronouncing that wrong so much during The 12 Days of Christmas.
• This is the second time that firearms are shown in a Dan Schneider production, the first time being in Drake and Josh Go Hollywood.
• The last time this movie aired on Nicktoons was December 20, 2020.
• In Perry Gilbert's flashback scene, an excerpt of the shot of the monkey laughing at Perry while urinating on him has been used earlier on, only in reverse.

Goofs[]

• It is unknown why Drake and Josh didn’t give Bobo to Officer Gilbert.
  • Since Megan made the boys give Bobo away in My Dinner with Bobo, they may have been unable to give him to Officer Gilbert.
• Judge Newman said that Drake and Josh never got arrested, but Drake got detained one time in Grammy, they got arrested in The Gary Grill and Josh got arrested about nine times in Theater Thug. And Josh was mentioned in Grandfathered that he was in jail for stalking Oprah.
  • These charges were most likely exonerated due to Josh being found innocent.
• The captions say, "GPS down." But those words were never used.
• When Lily and Violet's first physical fight happen, they hit a table with wheels on the bottom of the legs and different colored cups sitting on top of it, and it rolls away, and the cups fall off the table. But after they go into the kitchen and fight more and the camera goes back to Drake and Josh talking to Mary-Alice, Zigfee, and Trey, you can see the table in the background in its original position, untouched.
• The simians that people refer to as monkeys throughout the movie are actually chimpanzees.
• Officer Gilbert says his name is Pierre. But on both his door and desk identifications, his name is spelled 'Perry'.
